Starting Point

The starting point of my walk was from my sister's apartment complex. The life outside on campus (as well as any campus) was busy, noisy, and had an abundant amount of sounds of traffic. So this starting point was a significant beginning of my recordings because it revealed the experience of a walker down this street on N. 17th Street and Wisconsin. I took notice of many sounds surrounding me as I took my walk but unfortunately the start of my walk was mainly the sounds of cars rushing by. Even so, the sounds coming from cars, buses, as well as a small clip of people's conversation helped form my clip, revealing a truth of the surrounding sounds on campus.

Across Central Library

Taking different perspectives from across Central Library as well as in front and going inside, it helped give different sounds from the surrounding environment around the public library. Taking in the sounds from birds in the bushes, people buying the latest newspaper, all these sounds make up the environment around Central Library on Wisconsin Avenue was more interesting to listen to since you have to be so quiet in the library.

Grand Avenue

Downtown where the traffic is the mainstream of music, and the mall is the heart of it all, is why I stopped to record outside and inside. (Besides the fact that it was also very cold.) Outside the mall were shoppers, people in conversation, and of course, cars rushing to and fro. Inside the mall, however, proved to be more of a confinement of music playing, people shopping, talking, and pushing carts. This transition helped vary the difference of sound and gave me a chance to record two different perspectives of outside and inside of downtown Grand Avenue.

Borders and Chase Buildings

Continuing on from downtown Grand Avenue, it has been a very wet and cold day so I went inside the Borders building to find sound. As I explored the wonders of sound inside, I went back outside to continue my walk towards Water Street. Opening the door, re-entering the busy life of downtown Milwaukee, I gradually grasp the sound of church bells. Ironically there was no church in sight, instead, I came to find myself standing in front of the Chase building where the church bell music was projecting the strongest and loudest.

China Gourmet

As I went further with my walk, I continued down Water Street until the end of the block of Kilbourne Street, then I randomly walked back to the silent street of Wells. This part of the walk and section of my recording possessed the most silence because there were not that many cars to and fro. While walking, I found it surprising to catch the music of authentic chinese music and listened very closely to where it was coming from. It was across the street from a restaurant called China Gourmet. As I continued on in the area on Wells Street, it contained nothing but the sweet sounds of water dripping, birds sqawking, and people walking.

Drift Strategy

My drift strategy for my walking expedition was quite random yet was a set direction to where I knew I would most likely find and follow sounds. In which, I decided to go downtown in Milwaukee where the heart of sounds make themselves home. As I got right into the middle of it, I took a different direction to find new unique sounds other than traffic and more traffic. Thus, it led me to some silent streets surprisingly. Going into this walking expedition of mine, it was better for me to not follow a set path and rather prepare for the unexpected.
